I'm looking for a new powder. I've been loyal to Lancome since college, but I just don't feel like it provides my (aging) face with the coverage it did before. I've asked around some and have some recommendations.

First is Laura Mercier.I love their eye illuminator and tinted moisturizer. I don't buy them regularly because that's a lot of money to spend on make-up, but I've splurged before.

I've also heard good things about Bobbi Brown.

I've never tried any of these products, but they are highly lauded on blogs and fashion magazines. I'm also interested in trying the creamy concealer kit. Lancome made a Photogenic Concealer that I was in absolute love with and then two years ago they discontinued it. I was devastated. Remember that episode of Saved By the Bell where Lisa and Screech were going to be in a dance contest together and then when she heard that they discontinued her favorite color of nail polish, she kicked the TV and broke her foot? That's what I felt like doing, except I was in Dillard's and kicking something would probably not have been well received.

The other make up I've heard is good is Yves Saint Laurent. I'm not too keen on spending nearly $50 on powder, though. I'll probably try one of the other two OR end up going with Lancome because I'm typically a creature of habit. We shall see!

oh na, na, what's my name?

I honestly don't know why I chose "Whimsical Release" as my original blog title. Well, I guess I do like all things whimsical and I was thinking this blog would be a release for me. So, I guess I do know how I came about the name, but, it just doesn't fit me and my life anymore. So I've been thinking about a name change for a while. Every blog I read has such a clever name, I didn't want to haphazardly re-name my blog. So, I gave it some time. And some thoughtful consideration. And then I chose the name on a whim. Story of my life.

My family and close friends call me Eddie. Erica in spanish is pronounced Ed-e-ca. Remove the "ca" and it's Ed-e. Remove the "e," like my college roommate did and it's just "Ed." See what I did there?

So, welcome to a new year and to my abbreviat [ed] life!

Speaking of nicknames, do you remember Eddie Pinetti from the Wonder Years? Growing up I watched this show with my family every week. I was in lurve with Kevin. Eddie Pinetti was a bully in one (or maybe several?) episodes and while I was the furthest thing from a bully, my family started calling me Eddie Pinetti. I love that they still do. It makes me smile to think that I have a Wonder Years-inspired nickname.

Los Cabos

Well, the first month of the new year is half-way over and I have to be honest, I haven't been even a little committed to my goals. This year has already been so busy at work and I've pushed most of my personal goals to the side so that I can focus on being organized, anxiety-free and at peace while at work. It hasn't come without a few moments of squeezing my eyes shut, taking a few deep breaths and even a few heart palpitations. But, through it all, once I let God have control, I've been given His peace.

On Friday my sister, Joa and I Facetimed with my mom and dad and my pops mentioned a family vacation in Los Cabos! Joa and I have been trying to figure out travel plans for the year and a beach vacay with the family helps settle things a bit. I really wanted to go Paris for a joint 30th birthday trip and Joa wanted us to go to NYC because I'm always pestering him about going to NYC. Plus, I wanted a beach destination on the side because, well, we haven't done that since our honeymoon. But those three PLUS a trip to Puerto Rico in there somewhere is just a bit more than our budget allows for.

So, when pops said Los Cabos - I was OK with dropping Paris and hanging on to NYC and PR. I told Joa we can take our kids to Paris one day (where both Joa and I signed our names on the Eiffel Tower and where I first told him I liked him our junior year of HS).

All that to say, I'm ready to drop some elbees (one of my 2012 goals) and get beach ready. No diets for me this time around. Just a commitment to sensible eating (juicing a few times a week) and exercise. I really want to start doing yoga, as well as running. I have a gym membership, so the running is taken care of (plus the availability of the open road), but yoga gets pricey. So, I'm going to have to figure that one out. I'd say I could go to the classes at the gym, but those are always at stay-at-home mom times like 11:45 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Yeah, um, hello? I work.

Here's to beaches and the city that never sleeps in 2012.

We are hosting a party for New Year's Eve. I much prefer it to braving the (douchey) crowds in Dallas, shoving people out of the way to get a drink circa Erica in college and most definitely don't want to be driving with so many people drinking.

My eyes are always bigger than my hands and in my head there's tons of sparkle, dazzle and Pinterest projects, but alas, there's just not enough time. Here are a few that I am managing to pull off though.

I don't like the word resolution. I'm one of those that always breaks them by the second week of the year. I so admire those that follow through with their resolutions. Like my sweet friend over at Sum of All Things. I'm pretty sure it was her resolution one year (or was it Lent?) not to eat a single french fry. And she did it. She said no to french fries for a year. I would have caved at the first waffle fry put in front of me. Hence, I'll stay away from resolutions, and rather list a few things I'd like to accomplish in 2012.

Read as many books authored by the Lost Generation as possible

Run a half-marathon

Host a Saturday-morning brunch for my close friends using recipes found on Pinterest and my two new recipe books!

Cook more creatively

Take a class - not sure what type of class yet, but I want to go back to school for something.

Take at least 25 crafts on my Duh board (or any board, for that matter)

Do something dramatic with my hair

Let God into parts of my life I've tried to be in control of for far too long

Take more photos

Finish painting the interior of our home

Redecorate the master bedroom

Thankful for so much. I just didn't get around to finishing the blog post about some of the things I am so thankful for. So, here it is, a month late and in an abbreviated form.

16. My iPhone: I am obsessed with my iPhone. I had the original one in 2007 and upgraded to the 4 last year. I don't care what anyone says, this phone is amazing and I wouldn't trade it (except for a newer one, of course) for anything.

17. Books: I vowed to read more in 2011 and I think I did a pretty good job. I was a bookworm when I was younger and it kind of tapered off as I got older. But I do love what a good book offers me - an escape, some solace, investment in characters I'll never meet, exercise for my imagination, etc.

18. My godsons (all four of them): I'm not the best nina in the world. I don't call as much as I should (for those godsons that are far away) and I am guilty of only sending gifts on important occasions sometimes, but I love my godsons so much. I'm grateful that their parents see me as someone they want in their children's lives in that very special role.

19. Chick-fil-A: Yes, they are a client, but even before that, I could not get enough of those tasty nuggets and waffle fries. I have memories of going to Chick-fil-A in El Paso at Sunland Park Mall and devouring a four-pack nugget meal with BBQ and Polynesian sauce. Mmmm, mmmm good.

20. My car: I'm grateful that I have a car at all. And I'm doubly grateful for one with a GPS system (I got lost for four years in Lubbock and it is on a fool-proof grid), seat warmers, a sun roof for those lovely Dallas days when the temp is just right, an A/C that works for those horrid Dallas days when the temp is too high and even a DVD player that I've come to accept as part of the package (it was too mommyish for me initially, but one day my little bbs will love it, I'm sure).

21. Puerto Rican food: I lucked out to have lived in PR for a good number of years for many reasons, but mostly for the food (and for the husband, of course). Arroz con gandules, habichuelas or whatever other bean you prefer, tostones, mofongo, pasteles, bacalaito, medalla, coquito, pinon, amarillos, quenepas, mayoketchup, quesitos and any of the other fried foods you find on the island. I'm thrilled to married to a man who can make most of the good stuff and to have a mother-in-law who makes up for what he can't make on her visits here.

22. Nail polish. That is all.

23. Clean sheets: I love getting into the bed on that first night after changing the sheets. I wish I had the time to wash my sheets every day. That would probably get expensive, with all that water for just sheets. Joa would probably not be happy when he got the water bill. But, he'd have clean sheets.

24. My camera: I just got back my camera (well not really got back but I misplaced the battery charger and didn't get around to buying one for a while) and am so sad to not have had it with me for some really important occasions. I always felt like I was missing out on opportunities to take photos that one day I wanted my children to be able to look at. Photos are such an important part of capturing memories, passing on memories, passing on traditions even. It's great to have a phone with a camera, but I don't think I'd ever replace a point and shoot with my iPhone camera.

25. My Chi: My hair has become accustomed to being straightened and now it won't do the pretty, half wave/half curl thing it used to do. So, when I let my hair air dry, I get remarks from Joa like, "What's wrong with your hair?" Or, "Your hair looks craaaaaaazy." So, my gratefulness for the chi is a bit double edged. I'm grateful for the fact that I have it now or my hair would be a gross mess every day. But I'm perturbed that I developed a habit of using it all the time, which has led me to why I am grateful for it in the first place. Does any of this make sense?

26. Mascara: My eyelashes are long, but not like, ohhhhh...look at her long, pretty, eyelashes. They are more like, ohhhhh, look at her long eyelashes that stick straight out. Hence, I need mascara and a curler for that matter. I'm thankful that someone, somewhere mixed bat poop with all the right ingredients and created a black smear that keeps my eyelashes somewhat out of my eyes.

27. Wine. Duh.

28. My brain: It's not always properly functioning, but it's there and it makes a valiant effort.

29. I'm stumped here. I mean I know there's something out there I can list here, but I'll let you think of what YOU are thankful for in this slot.

30. God. He's the reason I'm alive. The reason I breathe. The reason I can move all of my limbs and can see and hear and taste and smell. He's the reason I have all of the 29 things I listed. He's the reason I am forgiven and have everlasting life. He's the reason. The reason for everything.

Way behind...

The point of my thankful posts was to actually log on every day and write about something I'm grateful for, but clearly that didn't happen. At the very least, I vow to see this little project through, even if it means listing 10 things in one day! Here goes.

10. My Kindle: Joa got me a Kindle for Three King's Day this year and I just love it. Though I still love the feel of an actual book in my hands, the Kindle is just so handy. It traveled with us to Spain, it was my constant companion during my "Hunger Game" reading days, it fits in my purse and you just can't beat the book prices (tons of free books = score). If you are considering an e-reader and are just looking for one to read (not an all-in-one iPad), I highly recommend the Kindle.

11. Water: This seems like an obvious thing to be thankful for, but I think it's something we all take for granted sometimes. The fact that we have access to clean drinking water whenever we want, to water for showers and water for washing the dishes. It pains my heart that others around the world have to ration their water, have to drink dirty water or just don't have it at all. I am most definitely thankful for H2O.

12. Ginger Snaps from World Market: I just did a quick search and couldn't find them on the World Market website. Boo! But let me tell you, these little treats are so addicting! They come in a decorative tin and I'm not lying when I say I could eat the whole thing in one sitting. They are so flavorful and really put me in the holiday season!

13. Friends: I could write on and on about how thankful I am for each of my friends. I am insanely blessed in that department. God had placed wonderful people in my life, each one offers something different than the others and if I take a step back, it's easy to see why God put each of them in my life when He did. I really have a true support system, understanding, love and tons of laughs with my friends. I could never really express just how thankful I am for each of them.

14. Laughing: Speaking of laughs, I'm so thankful for laughing. I do it a lot. And sometimes it's really loud. But I don't care. It's wonderful to just get it out there sometimes. I love giggling, snorting, clutching my stomach from laughing so hard, letting out a scream before I laugh, squeezing out a few tears from an especially good laugh and even a hearty chuckle. Thankfully, I have plenty of people in my life that make me laugh!

15. Family: Immediate and extended alike. I'll start with my immediate. I'm not quite sure what I would do without my parents, sister and brother. My mom and dad are seriously bananas. I'm so thankful for the relationship that I have with them. I can pick up the phone and call anytime and they are there to listen, encourage and just love me. Like all families, we have our moments of frustration and there has been plenty of eye-rolling (my dad used to ask me if my eyes hurt whenever I rolled my eyes), but who doesn't have that in their family? The important thing is that we are there for each other. My siblings and I are all pretty different from each other and while it has taken me (and sometimes still does) some time to understand those differences, I see how beautiful and wonderful they are. We are bound to each other by a love that cannot be broken and for that I am so, so, so thankful. My extended family is, well, quite extended. My mama has NINE sisters and my dad has two sisters and one brother, so the tias and tios and cousins abound. I love the memories I have of playing with 10 or 15 cousins, that we all still keep in touch (for the most part), that we can go back home for Thanksgiving and Christmas and catch up like no time has passed at all and that we are a loud Mexican family that loves to eat, sing and dance together (OK, that's mostly Gomez right there!). I am thankful, thankful for all of my grandparents, though I only have my Grandma Fabi left here with us. My big family is one of the reasons that I think about having a big family - I want my children to have those same memories of playing with their cousins, creating ties with their siblings that can't be explained and passing on our family traditions to their children, so that the Gomez/Medina families live on.

I looked back at my post and realized that I totally skipped day five. And owe eight and nine. So, here it is.

5. Spotify. I'm not a DIE hard music fan. I don't have super eclectic taste and don't seek out those unnamed bands that nobody knows about but are super cool. I'm a fan of Top 40, get some of my music from Joa's Rolling Stone subscription, listen to classical about 60 percent of the time I'm in my car, love Britney Spears and can listen to the same album over and over without getting tired of it. Suffice it to say, it doesn't take much to please me in the music department. But I do like a little variety while I'm at work and I was getting sick of Pandora's inability to correctly gauge my music genre. Plus, those 40 hours run out pretty quickly when you forget your music playing, but on mute during meetings and conference calls. I've tried turntable.fm, last.fm, Grooveshark, etc. I was never satisfied. In comes Spotify. I can build playlists without time restrictions, listen to the same artist, album or even song over and over. And if I'm feeling too lazy to find my own music, I can poach playlists that my friends have built. It's a music match made in heaven. I don't think that you need an invite anymore, but if that's the case, let me know and I'll send one your way!

My hizzle in Spain this summer

8. Joa: Yesterday was my three year wedding anniversary. It's hard to believe that three years ago I was engaged. I was preparing for my wedding. I was still calling Joa my fiancé. We've enjoyed a relatively easy three years. We experienced a few bumps in the road our first year (we were laid off within one week of each other and then I was unemployed for nearly six months), but other than that, I've fallen more in love with him, I've learned things about him that I didn't know before, I've become more comfortable with him, I've continued to find myself attracted to him, he's supported me, he's encouraged me, he's called me on my BS, he's helped me grow, he's loved me no matter what, he's given me BAM moments (our version of butterflies) and he's just overall been a really good husband. I knew when I was 18 that I wanted to marry Joa. I told my mom. I'm so blessed that it turned out I was right. I love you, baby.

9. Cheese: Speaking of anniversaries, Joa and I went to Rise for dinner last night to celebrate our little milestone. It's a super quaint restaurant with a rustic cottage feel with fare that mostly consists of soufflés. But what stood out to me more than our main course and even dessert was the amazing international cheese cart that was presented to us. A veritable feast of cheeses with a presentation that rivaled the experience of eating the cheese. We chose three cheeses and enjoyed them with crostinis, olives, a raspberry spread, candied pecans and dates. I savored every bite while sipping prosecco. If you live in Dallas, I highly recommend Rise for a date night.

Six Pick Up Sticks Seven...not yet Eight

Blogger for the iPhone isn't very friendly. Hence, no day five blog post yesterday. We were in Houston for a wedding over the weekend and while I was glad to get away, it was most definitely tiring. Next Sunday (through no fault of my own) we are hosting a potluck for a few (read: a lot) of our neighbors. After a slew of break-ins I told Joa that it was time to get to know our neighbors and rather than just have a few people at a time, I coordinated with my neighbor, left her in charge of the invite list, and 15 custom invites later, our home will play host to casseroles, shishkabobs and baked goods. As if that wasn't enough, I decided to tack on a few home projects before people come over. So, there's been a little bit of stress to say the least. However, I'm just going to take it one thing at a time. That's allllllllll I can do. For realla realla. Without further ado six and seven:

6. My home: I didn't like our home when we first saw it. We had seen probably 80 homes and I was tired. I was looking for something that didn't really exist. But after a few prayers and several persuasive arguments from Joa, I knew it was the home for us. And every day for a year, I have fallen more in love with it. Our wood floors, the way they creak from the steps of the families that have lived here before. The black door that is easily distinguishable from the street and radiates extreme heat in the evenings when the sun is setting in the west. The wood-burning fireplace, painted wood panel walls in the living room, the master bedroom that's a little too hot in the summer and a lot too cold in the winter, the counter in our spare bathroom that resmbles a butcher block and even our 1970's blue tile in the master bedroom. I love it all and I realize what a blessing it is to have a home to come home to and a roof over my head when I sleep at night.

7. Cauliflower: This is short and simple. I currently am obsessed with oven roasted cauliflower. A little olive oil, kosher salt, fresh-ground pepper and a dash of cayenne are the perfect side to any dinner. Try it. It's delish.

Three and Four

Yikes! I knew that there would be a day that I'd double up on posts, but I didn't expect it to be so early. Just means more of my ramblings for you to read!

3. I am so very very blessed and thankful for my good health. I can walk, run, see, hear, move all of my joints without pain (well save for a few "you are almost 30" sore spots) and that is something to be oh-so thankful for. As I near the big three-oh, I have definitely noticed changes in my body. A little more squishy, less muscle mass, dimples in places I don't want them, etc. I realize that eating healthy (which I most definitely don't always do) isn't enough to be healthy. I really need to get into an exercise regimen! If I can prevent some of this sagging, it is definitely warranted! But, overall, I am healthy and I don't want to take that for granted!

4. Weir's Coffee. I'm not a big coffee drinker. I had an unfortunate accident when I was younger which involved wanting to feel like a grown up, drinking a few cups of coffee and consequently spending the night in the restroom, and that forever altered my view of java. Plus, it makes me pretty shaky and I just don't like that feeling. When I go to Starbucks I order a chai tea latte and that is just enough caffeine for me. However, about a year ago, Joa and I were furniture shopping at Weir's, a wonderful family-owned furniture store here in Dallas, and we stumbled upon their quaint country store, right in the middle of all that furniture. The aroma of flavored coffee, the sight of home-made fudge and a cornucopia of serving platters was a welcome treat from looking at dining room tables that all pretty much looked the same to me. I wandered over to their selection of coffee and zeroed in on a Snickerdoodle roast. Before I knew what I was doing, I ordered 16 oz. and my life was forever changed. I look forward to my Weir's coffee every morning, especially as the temperatures begin to cool - that hot cup of coffee is just what I need to warm my body in the morning. An added bonus is that Joa does not like flavored coffee so I get the whole 16 oz to myself! So Weirs, thank you for my dining room table, but more importantly, I'm thankful that I get to start my mornings with a drink that has doodle in its name.

Marley A. Martinez

It may come as a surprise to those that know me well that I am choosing to include Marley, our dog, on my list of things I am grateful for - on the second day, no less. Here's the thing, Marley was Joaquin's before we got back together. I was (and remain to this day, though Joaquin disagrees) the other woman. I swept in and made changes, took the alpha female role and stole Joa's attention from Marley. She resented me for it and she didn't really hold back in showing it. Rocky relationship doesn't even begin to cover the path on our acclimation to each other. But in time, Marley grew on me. And more importantly than the fact that yes, I do love her, she's taught me patience, humility (what else do you feel when you find yourself on your hands and knees in an LBD with your New Year's Eve guests watching as you wipe up pee?), she's jump started my motherly instinct and I've learned that everyone wants love in different ways (Marley's love language is physical touch - belly rubs will go a long way).

2. So Marley Ann Martinez (Marls Barkley, Marley Cyrus, Mizzle), despite our spats, slammed doors, puddles of pee, spiteful attempts to spill your food all over the floor and your gnarly breath, I am thankful for you. You are my first dog, after all and no other dog will ever occupy that space in my heart.

I don't blog anymore. It's true. I just can't find the time. But for November at least, I've decided to fire up this little blog on a mission to put into words the things that I am thankful for - all of my blessings.

Have you seen this? This wonderful, giving woman who spent her 38th birthday doing 38 random acts of kindness? It's inspiring. And it compelled me to take a look at my life, the one that I all too often complain about (not enough of this or too much of that, blah blah blah), and just be thankful for the little things. And for the big things. And all the things in between.

So here it goes.

1. I'm thankful for the group of girls that gathered at my house tonight. I'm thankful that every time we meet they open their hearts to each other and to the Lord. Each one of them offers honesty, humor, love, support and wisdom that I truly look forward to on our Tuesdays together. Thank you, girls.

Late Memorial Day Recap

I had a fantastic time in Mexico City with my family and my two best friends from college. After four-and-a-half years, my parents are leaving DF to move back home. That is the longest that they have ever stayed in one place since I was in kindergarten! We had fantastic food, did all of the touristy stuff, walked a lot and had wonderful family/friend time!

Vacation FOMO

In just under a month I will be in Spain with three of my favorite people in the whole world. This trip has been something we talked about doing for a while and then last September we bit the bullet and bought the plane tickets. There was no looking back once the flights were booked. I can't believe that our trip will be here so soon and I'm starting to think non-stop about what we should do (and what I will wear!). I'm not a HUGE planner on vacations; I like to do some things on a whim so it doesn't feel like work, but also like a bit of planning. But I do suffer from a major case of FOMO. FOMO is well-documented and has even been the subject of a New York Times article. While this particular case of FOMO is not related to social media, it is FOMO none-the-less. Here is what I fear: missing all of the wonderful secret spots in Barcelona, Sevilla and Granada because I'm so focused on visiting all of the "must-sees." Of course we will visit Gaudi's cathedral and see some of his other work. We will walk through Las Ramblas and eat tapas to our hearts (and tummy's ) content. And shopping, oh I will shop shop shop. But those are given, right? I want to discover the real Barcelona. I want to traipse through secret gardens and stumble into hole in the wall restaurants where locals eat. I don't want to miss charming little shops tucked into side streets or miss an opportunity to sit for a few hours on a table that belongs to a lovely sidewalk cafe because I'm stomping around looking for the best place to eat. I just want to be. And live in the moment every second that we are there.

This is the first overseas vacation that J and I have taken (other than our honeymoon, but beach vacations are a little different - I mean who would need to leave here?), so I am probably putting a bit more pressure on it than I need to. I guess that's the first thing I need to let go of - the pressure to make it amazing. Do you have secrets for making the most of your vacation?

I think it is quite obvious that I don't use this forum for more than just silly fodder. I'll leave real blogging to those who know what they are doing. So, when I received my invite to "Pinterest," I was thrilled to begin a love affair with a site that fits my lust for pretty images of all kinds - food, spaces, travel, fashion, etc...

I haven't had quite as much time as I'd like to endlessly peruse all of the images that others are putting up there, but you will see that my little boards are beginning to fill up. And I'm so in awe of what others have found by digging toward the center of the Internet.

Time After Time

Whew, what a difference time really does make. I'm just over two months into my new job and feeling much more at ease. The knots in my stomach on the way to work are gone. My (professional) confidence is inching its way back slowly but surely. And save for one major panic attack (I'm talking crying in the bathroom and all) I feel like I'm finding my place here.

I've learned so much in these two months, which has really helped me in knowing that this was the right move for me. That and reminding myself that God put me here for a reason, of course.

My last post was a bit dramatic, but those emotions were real and part of the adjustment to a new job. And will I be riddled with insecurity from time to time? Sure. It's part of growing and learning I think. But will I let it drive me to my blog for a pityfest? Well, let's hope not!

I feel compelled to write on here while sitting in a Starbucks in Atlanta. I should be working on a press release but I feel crippled by a feeling of insecurity. It's my fourth week at the new job and I've felt the feeling festering inside for the majority of the time. There were brief periods of relief when I was too busy to think, but those moments were far and few between. What is this feeling? I know it has been planted there and for some reason I'm not calling upon the strength I know is there to push it away.

I've done this job for a year and a half and have been successful. At least I thought that was success. Media placements. Increased Twitter and Facebook following. Online engagement. And the ultimate dictator of success - priase from my superiors at work. But all of that dissolved when I stepped into an entirely new arena. Agency work is so different and I'm surrounded by people whose minds seem to be steps ahead of mine all the time. I find myself overthinking things so that I can be the one to remark on seemingly obvious observations. I've found some of my words and actions are forced in hopes that I please those around me. I feel like any moment someone from the agency is going to walk over and tell me they know I'm a phony and that I should just pack up and leave.

But why? Why am I feeling this way? I know I'm capable of doing well in my job. I know who I am. I know my abilities and I know my weaknesses. I've always prided myself in my confidence - not arrogance - just a comfort in knowing who I am. I thank my parents for instilling that in me. But now, where is that confidence? It's been buried deep under layer upon layer of self doubt. And I'm trying to break through and gasp for air but I just can't.

I'm here for a reason. God put me here to grow and learn. My co-workers know my background. They know the experience I've had and where I lack it and still hired me. So why can't I shake the gnawing feeling in my heart?

Book Challenge - Book Number One

I've started reading the first book of my Book Challenge 2011 - Gone with the Wind. It was the recommendation of my sweet friend Karin (Mattie P's mama). I read it in eighth grade, but decided to read it again since that was so long ago and I like to think that I can be a bit more astute about the underlying themes that Ms. Mitchell wrote about.

I'm enjoying the book so far but find myself thinking about the movie more than focusing on the content of the book. I need to find a way to separate the two and really concentrate on the contents of the book. It's just so hard to ignore the images of Vivian Leigh in the sprawling mounds of gorgeous tulle and her beautiful bonnets that pop into my head while reading.

Perhaps I don't have to. Perhaps I can find a way to marry the two and still enjoy the book as a classic piece of literature.

On a musical note, I heard this song on Parenthood (I heart that show) and can't get it out of my head. I really enjoy CBR's music.

NYE (a late recap)

I think I had the most fun I've ever had on New Year's Eve this past year. We had our friends over and that was so much less stressful than going out and fighting the masses.

It was a lovely night with the beautiful friends that we are blessed with in our lives.

There was plenty of food (even though I was stressing about running out of small bites) and liquor to spare (I never had to worry about running out of that - Joa made sure the bar was stocked).

I wore a $12 lace dress that I found at Lula B's, which was so much more gratifying than spending a lot of money on a dress that I won't wear again for a while because I'm particular about having the same dress on in pictures.

I brought out these moustaches that I made for some fun photos - I love the results.

Overall it was a great night. Cheers to 2011.

We had a beautiful Christmas holiday. It was filled with friends, food, presents, abundant blessings and warm fires by the fireplace. And the very special baptism of our new godson, Mattie P.

I can't believe we are going to begin a new year. It's a big year for us with a trip to Spain in June with our best friends, Joa's little sister graduates from high school, my parents move back to the US and some other exciting events. I am very much looking forward to a new year and to seeing what God has planned for us!

PS I already have some book recommendations for my 2011 Book Challenge, among them are Gone With the Wind (which I read in 8th grade, but am going to read again because I don't know that I appreciated it then like I should), The Lion the With and the Wardrobe (another book I read when I was younger, but would like to read now) and Hunger Games. I can't wait to start reading!

It isn't hard to tell from the sparse entries on this blog that my dedication level to keeping this blog updated has been, admittedly, low. What can I say? I get home from work and I don't exactly run to the office to sit down and spew engaging, unforgettable content. Instead, I harrumph to the kitchen, throw together the easiest meal I can muster (that is if I've remembered to take out meat the night before, otherwise it's cereal central for the mister) and then plop myself in front of the TV for an onslaught of 30-minute shows that elicit just enough laughter to convince me to watch the next week's episode.

But that life is certainly not what I envisioned I would be doing with myself at 28. There's still so much time left in the day when I get home from work to go on walks, work on projects around the house, cook meals that bring joy to my husband's belly and of all the things I know there is time for, reading is the one I have continually fought myself to do.

I grew up with my nose buried in books. Baby Sitters Club, Boxcar Children, every single Roald Dahl book (the BFG and Matilda were my favorite), a set of children's encyclopedias, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh, Shel Silverstein poems and Beverly Cleary books are amongst those that come to mind when I think of the treasured times I spent laying on my bed, riding in the car, sitting in front of the TV and all the while, ignoring the world around me in favor of the one that was created in the magical pages in my hand. I'm ready to find those worlds again.

I'm declaring 2011 the year of challenges and my first challenge to myself is to read a book a month. But not just any book. Not a book I picked out after hours of wandering around Half-Price books or a book I heard from a friend of a friend was good. No, that isn't quite enough. I have amazing women in my life. Women who inspire me. Make me laugh. Bring me joy. Teach me. Advise me. Mentor me. Love me for who I am. And those women deserve their favorite books to be read and shared by more than just them.

I've asked 11 of my sweet girl friends to send me the title and author of their favorite book with the intention of reading one a month. Next December I will close out the challenge with a book choice of my own.

I'm excited to see their recommendations and to learn a little bit about each of my friends through their choices.

Throughout this challenge (and some of the others I've issued myself, which I will write about later), I will try to update the blog. I think, more than anything, given that I post regularly, it will serve as a great reminder of the books I read 2011 and how they carried me through the events that were going on that particular month.

Until I begin, which, let's face it, won't be until January, I just want to say Merry Christmas! Many blessings to all of you!

Butternut Lump Soup and a Precious Baby

So I attempted to make my very first batch of Butternut Squash Soup yesterday after smelling how delicious it was at Whole Foods on Sunday.

I bought the squash and went home to research recipes. The diet I am on right now is pretty restrictive so I couldn't add the half and half or cream or milk that most recipes called for. A google search for "healthy butternut squash soup" yielded some disappointing results. So I decided (something I would regret later) to improvise. Not a good idea.

I cut the squash in half and put it in the oven. One recipe said to leave it in there for 30 minutes, so I decided to go for a quick run (not the safest idea, I know, but I was trying to multi-task). I came home and the house smelled wonderful! Just like the soup at Whole Foods. I was optimistic that I would soon be eating sweet, savory soup.

Well it all went downhill from there. Too much ginger and too many lumps resulted in a barely edible orange half-liquid half-solid food.

But was this lumpy mess in the end...

I think I'll wait until I can use the Paula Deen recipe (heavy cream included) before I try and attempt it again.

In order to lift my kitchen spirits, I went full force today, baking pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, pumpkin muffins, Rice Krispy treats and Halloweenie cookies all for a colleague bake sale we are having at work tomorrow, the proceeds of which will benefit our Light the Night Walk team (you can see our team page here). I loved filling our home with the smell of pumpkin - the fall is in full swing (even if it is 80 degrees outside still)!

And just to end this post, yesterday our very good friends had their first baby (well technically she had the baby, but you know what I mean). J and I were thrilled to be able to go visit them today! The baby is absolutely precious, so soft, smells good and the sweetest thing to hold. Congrats K+P on your Mattie P!

This Saturday I am heading to the State Fair of Texas and could not be more excited! While I'm actually on a pretty strict diet, I'm throwing dietary caution to the wind for a taste of the best corny dog you will find anywhere.

I can't wait to spend time with friends, bask in the glorious sun on Fair Park grounds (the weather is going to be bananas) and take in the smells of everything from sweet cotton candy to fried Frito Pie.

There is one small dark spot to an otherwise perfect bright picture of the day - my best friend, Shelly, had planned on making the trek from Florida (where she is rocking it in PA school) to Dallas for our annual State Fair of Texas trip, but the flights were astronomically high (don't get me started on airline ticket prices), so she won't make it.

Fret not, Shell Bell, I will revel in the Fletcher's Corny Dog for both of us!

I was an odd child. I would become somewhat obsessed with the historical periods we were studying in school. I made my mom sew me a traditional Mayan dress when we were studying the ancient culture, I checked out every book on Egyptians when my sixth grade social studies teacher said we would be reading about King Tut, I was intent on finding out what happened to Amelia Earhart when she was the topic of my reading class in fifth grade.

The first time I found myself completely enthralled by a historical figure was in second grade, when we studied Martin Luther King Jr. I wanted to know everything about him, I asked my parents if we could rent "Mississippi Burning," I wrote him a long letter and cried when my teacher showed us the I Have a Dream video in class. Suffice it to say, I was inspired by this man's fearlessness and his dream for the world.

Here is that amazing speech that still makes me weep today.

I thought I had managed to stave off any of the sickness that had been going around my office. I drink emergen-c at least once a day. I wash my hands and use anti-bacterial gel all the time. I've stayed away from my ailing co-workers. But alas, it has found me and made its presence known at the back of my throat.

So, I'm medicating with cough drops and Project Runway.

Observations:

I love the length of Heidi Klum's hair, that's what I'm waiting for mine to grow out to
Seeing the clothes that the designers have already designed made me want to explore an affair I had once long ago with etsy (I may or may not have another tab open right now).
They are back in NY - yay! Now let's get me there and I'll be squared away!
I'm waiting until at least episode two to chose a fave - but I already know that Janeane Marie cries too much for me. Pull it together woman!

Later today J has planned a secret date for us and I am so excited! I've asked a million questions but he's keeping mum, which I love and hate at the same time, but secretly love more than anything!

I read my past blog posts today and it was the weirdest thing. I felt all the feelings I felt at the time I was writing each post. Most of the posts were during the time I was unemployed, so it was this dichotomy of emotions - what I felt when I was endlessly and sometimes desperately job searching and the bliss I feel now that I have the most amazing job doing exactly what I want to be doing. I'm amazed still that this blessing came at a time when I was very close to losing it as well as at the end of my unemployment funds (I refused to ask for an extension).

What a journey it has been! I think this blog will evolve from here on out. I'd like it to be more of a journal than a list of things I want. What better way to chronicle the ups and downs and side to sides of my life than online - where it will never be lost? OK, that's a bit daunting.

I'm off to enjoy the weekend - it's been a long week and I can't wait to spend some "reconnection" time with J.

goals, not resolutions

I didn't make resolutions last year because you know, most of the time they are thrown out the window by the second week of January.

This year, however, after going through some experiences that forced me to grow, I've decided that there are goals I want to reach in 2010. I've started writing them down in a beautiful journal my husband got me for our one-year wedding anniversary.

I'm taking this opportunity to make changes - I know I can't really start fresh - nor would I want to - where I am in my life is amazing and full of blessings, but I can tweak a few things, work hard to make it to some places I've never been, take different paths, try new things, leave old habits behind and love more.

Above all, I will count my blessings every day.

La Gripa is the spanish phrase for a cold and the gripa had a tight grip on me in the last couple of days. But I'm feeling much better now!

I hope everyone is having a good week and your Thanksgiving plans are coming together. I went to the grocery store today and stocked up on Libby's Pure Pumpkin, pecans for pecan pie, pie shells, a turkey and a spiral ham. My family (mom, dad and little brother) arrive on Tuesday and I can barely contain my excitement! I get to use my wedding china for the first time! And I get to use a lot of the wedding gifts that don't usually emerge from the pantry unless we are having a large feast!

Remember the days of hand turkeys, dressing up as Pilgrims and Indians and school feasts?

One other childhood memory I have of Thanksgiving is making these cute little Oreo turkeys. So cute!

I'm so excited for the holiday season!

I want to write a book - probably several and I have tons of ideas that I sometimes verbalize to J, sometimes elaborate in my mind and sometimes let pass me by.

But I know in my heart that I will write a book one day.

Sometimes I think it will be about things that I've gone through in the past - love, heartbreak, tragedy and triumph.

Other times I'd like to bury myself in research about something I don't completely know but that I could find myself immersed in.

I'm inspired by people and things around me. New friends, old friends, strangers driving next to me in the morning, lives that I can relate to and even those I can't.

People are ethereal. Places are nostalgic. Feelings are fleeting. I want to capture it all and share it.

And now I have a exquisite journal, courtesy of J, to write it all down in.

I felt like Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady when she sang about not wanting the night to end. I felt the same way this past weekend. We had the most amazing first wedding anniversary celebration. Here's a photo journey through it all.

UPDATE: My appointment has been made for today at 5:30. I'm la nervous!

Stephanie over at This Casita asked a big question, to chop or not to chop, something I've blogged about before and something, my friends will tell you, they turn off their hearing to when I bring up. I've been talking about chopping off my hair for over a year now and have yet to do it. I want something dramatic. My past two haircuts, I've come home and J has barely noticed - as a matter of fact, nobody notices! That's not a chop, that's a trim.

J says if I'm going to pay money for a haircut, it better be noticeable (he manages our money, can you tell?).

What I want, but not sure I can do (keep in mind, I have a round face).

Even though I blogged about our Halloween costumes (here) with much time to get them together, in true Erica form, I waited until the week before - specifically until four days before -to start the hunt for white shirts and jeans for me and J.

Who would have known that white jeans would be so hard to find? The first pair I bought J were women's jeans from Wal-Mart. He scoffed at wearing them and went on his own adventure to eventually find a pair that suited his needs. I admittedly hate digging for clothes in racks, so I stay away from the Rosses and Marshalls, but hit the jackpot at one of those for my pants! Top it off with a thermal I already owned, a bowler hat and cane from the Halloween Spirit store, some black nails, a fake eyelash and red lips and bam, you've got yourself a droog.

I was excited that we got qutie a few, "Ohhhh, Clockwork Orange, very cool," comments.

"I'm not sure I quite know what that means," Sophie said.

"Meanings is not important," said the BFG. "I can't be right all the time. Quite often I is left instead of right."

The BFG is a treasure, as are the rest of Rahl Dahl books, but this one tugs at my heart. My copy from when I was younger has a cover that's hanging by a thread because I read it so often. I was drawn to the gentle nature of the giant, to the care and attention he gives little Sophie, his exclamations (“Catasterous!” cried the BFG. “Upgoing bubbles is a catasterous disastrophe!”) and perhaps, most of all, to his giant ears. You see I was teased for having ears that slightly stuck out, but in my room, reading about the BFG's "very extra-usual ears indeed," I felt empowered and that I could face another day of name calling with the BFG's confidence.

If you haven't read the book, please do. It's a tale that I believe can be enjoyed at any age.

I am confident in my decision to have stayed in and watched the TX/OU game. Friends came over, brought us yummy grub from Whole Foods and we didn't have to fight traffic to get home after it was all over. Plus, with one touch of the remote, we were watching Texas Tech's victory over Nebraska!

Last week, Kelly from DesignCrush had a Caramel Apple Cider Martini recipe on her blog that I just had to try (you can see the post here)! As I was making the delicious libation, I realized that I had forgotten the Apple Cider part of the drink. Oops. It actually turned out to taste just fine without it though!

It's the perfect October drink - think candy apple in liquid form!

That night we had friends over for dinner too and baked an absolutely delicious blackberry pie - with fresh blackberries my friend Clint picked up that morning from the farmer's market. They were huge and plump and just perfect for baking into a pie!

It was such a lovely weekend with friends, football and amazing Dallas fall weather!

Red River Rivalry 2009

This weekend is craaaaaaaazy in Dallas as we play host to the Big 12 Red River Rivalry. UT and OU duke it out for rights to something. Traffic is already redonk and while I kind of would like to participate in the festivities, I also don't want to deal with the cluster. I'll stick to staying home and getting my guns up.

We are having friends over to watch the game tomorrow during the day and then another set of friends over for dinner. For desert at dinner we are baking TWO, yes DOS, pies! I can't wait! Most of all, I am looking forward to two days of uninterrupted time with my love! I hope your wedding plans are faboosh!

The State Fair of Texas 2009

Well, my wish for a warm State Fair of Texas day, which I asked for here, was put on the low priority list for the weather gods - I'm sure they meant to get to it, but for the first time in four years the sun was nowhere to be found at Fair Park on Saturday.

It didn't stop me from making a beeline to a Fletcher's Corny Dog stand and devouring the genius food-on-a-stick, not once, but twice. Sadly, there are no photos of the corny dog consumption.

I did however, catch J holding two beers (what, a surprise).

It's been nearly a year since the most amazing day of my life - my wedding day. Lately I have been feeling super nostalgic about that day. Sad that it is over. In disbelief that it will never be again. Actually missing the wedding planning. A little jealous of people who still have their weddings to have (hides head in semi-shame).

It's just that it was such a beautiful day - I want to have a wedding every year! Alas, a smaller scale anniversary celebration is in the works and is currently super top secret. J doesn't know what I'm planning and won't until the actual day! I was worried that things wouldn't all fall into place for what I had up my sleeve, but the stars have aligned and absolutely everything is PERFECTO!

There are some minor details to figure out, but other than that, I am so excited to be with my sweet husband on that day!

If it wasn't so darn expensive to clean and preserve my dress, I'd so bust it out and put it on again.

Am I alone in my post-wedding sadness?

When I was younger I had a candy corn incident.

You know what I mean.

I was so excited to have the little triangle confections in my hand that I ate and ate and ate until, well, let's just say I didn't eat candy corn for some years after that.

Once I was able to put the stripped candy in my mouth again, I made sure to eat them in small quantities, only a few at a time.

Which is probably the same thing I'd have to do with this candy corn cordial - but I'd definitely be willing to try at least one!

old school halloweenie movies

One of my most favorite things about Halloween are a few of the movies that play on TV - more specifically on ABC Family's 30 (or 10 or 5 - they change it every year) Days of Halloween. The one I look forward to most is the ever-popular Hocus Pocus!

But one other movie that I never see getting any TV love is The Worst Witch. A very young Fairuza Balk (The Craft, Almost Famous) plays magically-handicapped Mildred Hubble who has some problems fitting in with the other witches at a prestigious witch academy. In swoops Tim Curry (who plays the sweet transvestite in one of my other favorite Halloween movies, The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and saves her from a life of spoiled potions and bad broom rides when he recognizes that she truly does have what it takes to be a Top Witch. My favorite scene is when Mildred flies on his very large cape (which were his bat wings). Does ANYONE remember this movie too? Gosh I would love to see it again!

I'm pretty sure The Worst Witch and Hocus Pocus laid the foundation for the mad love I have for the Harry Potter series!

J loves Stanley Kubrick. The summer after our freshman year in college he came to stay with me and my family for one week. In one week we watched way too many Kubrick films. The man is a wee bit twisted, to say the least (or the most).

One movie that I was most disturbed by was A Clockwork Orange. There was some weird-O stuff going on in that flick.

Cut to a few years later - a Clockwork Orange thought hadn't passed through my mind - and I was minding my business, or rather other people's business, flipping through People magazine and I see a photo of Christina Aguilera dressed up in an all-white ensemble with suspenders and fierce make-up that I was oddly drawn to (I love her flair for the dramatic that manifests itself in her outfits and bold lipstick). It took me a few seconds to realize that she was paying an homage to the ultra-violent delinquents of Kubrick's film and I liked it.

So as I sat contemplating this year's Halloween costume, I knew at least one thing, that I didn't want to purchase one of those mass-manufactured, pre-assembled guises. I've always either waited too long to put together my outfit and not dressed up or been too lazy to think of something and begrudgingly bought an overpriced costume-in-a-bag.

So, I'm taking a cue from Ms. Aguilera and putting together a costume that I know I won't have to fight with my husband to wear.

Those are two words that much to my chagrin, best describe me.

I am, quite frankly, lacking of any musical talent.

In any way, shape or form.

Which is why I think I am so drawn to people with big bad amazing voices and/or mad dance skills.

The weather gods were smiling upon Dallas today and gave us the perfect first day of fall! A little drizzling rain and cool temps make me a happy girl!

I only ask one things of the fall - to give me a warm State Fair of Texas Day!

That's right, the State Fair of Texas is nearly here! Last year I had a countdown to the State Fair of Texas before I had one to my wedding. That is how much I love the State Fair of Texas.

Let me tell you why I love it.

1. Cotton candy to my hearts delight

3. A full day of fun with my hizzle and my friends

Tuesday is the first day of fall and I absolutely cannot wait!

I've been tiding my impatience with some fall baking (pumpkin muffins and pumpkin cake) and burning the Bath & Body works The Perfect Autumn Leaves fragrance oil as soon as I get home. The sweet smell is soothing and even if the Dallas heat is still blazing outside, I can close my eyes and make believe the cool temps are just outside my window.

But oh, to say that I get home from work - now that's worth the exhaustion.

And it's not just any work - it's work I have mad love for.

After two-and-a-half-months of back and forth between an organization I thought was going to be it for me, I landed a gig with a completely different company doing exactly what I wanted to be doing. BAM!

This is one happy camper!

I don't want to neglect my bloggerly duties, so I'll try and be better.

sweaty, I mean hot yoga

Two years ago my friend and I signed up for a Bikram Yoga class - a 5 a.m. Bikram Yoga class. In August. In Dallas. What were we thinking? Well that's a questions we still ask ourselves. I had heard such positive things about Bikram and how it could really transform your body, help with flexibility and burn an insane amount of calories. So, I went with pretty high expectations and was sorely disappointed.

The studio we went to was a true Bikram studio, as opposed to other hot yoga studios where the instructors may not be certified by Bikram, nor do they necessarily adhere to the temperature standards. Well, our instructors were militant-like, barking at students they thought could push themselves more, yelling at students who took drinks of water out of turn and creating a hostile environment in a place that is meant to be serene and meditative. On top of that, the studio smelled horrible.

Now, I can understand that all that sweat in that kind of heat is going to create a smell, but this was the kind of smell that I had to slowly accustom my nostrils to as soon as I walked into the studio. It took at least five minutes to actually walk into the room where we practiced because my stomach turned so violently. The clothes I used for classes had to be thrown out after that month because the smell would not come out.

It's really a shame that the studio turned out to be such a negative experience for me. I liked practicing the poses and the intensity of the heat, but could not handle the instructors or the smell.

Well, now, I think sufficient time has passed and I am ready to give it another try. I've found a small studio that offers hot yoga twice a week with a very good first-month introductory deal. I hope this experience allows me to forget what happened two years ago and really settle into a regular regime. I'd love to be able to do this:

What a beauty, no? I'm sitting at my local coffee shop, The White Rhino, and they are playing the most wonderful selection of jazzy, bluesy tunes from the 40's. The big voices, prominent horns and nostalgic melodies make me wish for a glimpse at that time in history! I just heard How About You by Judy Garland - I'd recognize that voice anywhere!

For the past couple of months I've been doing some volunteer PR work for the United Cerebral Palsy of North Texas (UCP). It has been such a great experience and I am so happy to give my time to an organization that serves such a broad rage of people. You would think from the name, that services offered by UCP are limited to those with cerebral palsy, but the truth is that 70 percent of people who are offered care at the UCP have a condition other than cerebral palsy. What an amazing testament to the reach that UCP has across North Texas!

On October 3, UCP is teaming up with Rick Fairless' Strokers Dallas for a fashion show unlike any that Dallas has seen. Fashion, motorcycles and music will create an explosion of rebel and chicness at the Gears & Glamour fashion show, where local public personalities will strut their stuff on the runway, modeling the latest in motor clothes and casual wear. The party continues after the show with a mini-concert by local rock band The PowderKegz.

Rock 'n' roll and fashion have always gone hand-in-hand. How many models have been in rock videos? How many rock gods have given their hearts and souls to the captivating beauties that jet across the world to walk runway after runway? Add in the freedom of a ride down a long stretch of highway with nothing but the road and scenery in front of you and you've found a trifecta made in (hog) heaven!

travel whimsies...

Before I got married, I discussed the children timeline with my husband. I wanted at least three years sans kids to enjoy married life, but mostly to travel. In that same discussion, I snuck in there that in those three years I wanted to do three trips: Spain, Greece and Italy. The truth is, I want much more than three, I want to travel the world, but realistically, I've been thinking about those three years and where I want to have gone with just my husband. I know there will be traveling with kids in tow, but it won't be the same. My three-year list is as follows.

Spain - I was an au pair in Madrid for four months, but I didn't get to travel to Barcelona or Seville. I'd like an itinerary that included all three cities.

Next on the itinerary is Greece. I'm a sucker for the stacked white buildings and brilliant rooftops that overlook the pristine water.

Last of the three original trips is Italy. I think I'd be a little overwhelmed with knowing where to go, but I do know for sure I'd want to visit Tuscany. Yes, I'm a sucker for Under the Tuscan Sun.

Other trips I'd like to take include a three-or-four day trip in the autumn to see the bright colors of the fall foliage in the Northeast.

A trip across South America. Every country.

A stop in India and Bali (inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat Pray Love).

OK so really, this list could go on and on and on. The world offers so many distinct landscapes, cultures, people, foods, traditions, etc. that it would be foolish, in my opinion, not to take advantage of them.

The last place I will mention is, at this point in my travels, my favorite place on this planet. The energy, the pulse, the people, the variety, the fashion, the food - everything about the city, from the grandiose to the miniscule - they all fill my insides with complete and utter happiness. I watch movies and TV shows just to get a fix, I research and plan hypothetical trips, I nag my husband constantly about wanting to go. Where, you ask, am I speaking of? Naturally, I am referring to New York City. I've been a handful of times and can never get enough. I truly do LOVE NY.

I think I watched my 80's movies out of order. I didn't get around to seeing Breakfast Club until well after Sixteen Candles and Pretty in Pink had become my favorites. I'd watch those movies over and over again - sometimes I'd have them playing in the background of my apartment in college while I cleaned or studied, just for the comfort of having them on.

Yesterday, John Hughes, writer and director of those movies passed away at the young age of 59. What a sad day for his family, friends and the legions of adults who got through adolescence with the help of a brain, and a basket case, a princess and a criminal.

Thank you, Mr. Hughes, for leaving us with these treasures.

Some days I feel like my brain is going to explode. The reason? I'm not quite sure what I want to be when I grow up and it drives me crazy.
At this point in my life I know that I have an interest in public relations. I want to work for a company that I believe in, I want to help create strong and lasting relationships with audiences through open, honest and transparent communication and I want to work for a company that gives back.
But what about my interest in photography? And a fascination with all things culinary? Don't forget my plan to write a few books one day. Oh, and how could I leave out the few entrepreneurial business plans I want to one day set in motion?
What happens to all of these things when I am busy with the job that makes me some much-needed cheddah? How do I balance the career that sustains my life with hobbies, passions and interests that remain at the forefront of my mind?

In preparation for my first visit to Austin City Limits I've been making some iTunes purchases and expanding my realm of music. Though I'd like to boast a broad range of musical interests, I tend to find something I like and stick with it for a while. For the past two years my go-to album is Adele's 19 - I can listen to that album while doing anything from working out to cover-letter writing and it puts me in just the right mood. Other albums I can put on repeat and never tire of are Only by the Night by Kings of Leon and Taking the Long Way by Dixie Chicks. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the shuffle feature on my iPod - with a few standout songs I am particularly fond of without having a love affair with the whole album. These include my most favorite song in the whole wide world, Breath Me by Sia (I once put the song on repeat on an eight-hour flight, fell asleep and woke up in a euphoric trance-like state), The Heart of the Matter by India Arie, several Britney Spears songs - my fave BS song is Overprotected the Darkchild Remix - a gaggle of Spanish rock songs and a handful of rap songs. Reading over this it would seem my music scope is quite narrow - I promise this is just a sample of the albums that have gone in and out of my ears over the years. Still, I know there are hardworking artists out there that deserve a listen and ACL affords them an opportunity to grow their fan base. This is exactly what happened with Passion Pit and their electro-pop sounds. I immediately loved their album and am very much looking forward to hearing them live in a couple of months.

I'm so overwhelmed by the ACL lineup - I don't really know which bands to invest in and with just about two months before the big concert, I'd like to zero in on a few bands. One artist I am looking forward to hearing live is Bon Iver, his songs are sweet and would be perfect in one of this summer's romantic movies. I'm off to do more blind research and find some artists I can sink my teeth into!

My two other fall staples are coffee houses and classical music. Those two things got me through many finals, a thesis and most recently some job-search related stuff. And on the fashion front, there's many more things I'm looking forward to as well: tights and tulip skirts, men's blazers, suede booties, layered chain necklaces and I'm still on the hunt for a skinny jean. Oh fall, how I love thee.

The lull in posts is a mixture of me being a bit occupied with some stuff (good stuff!) and trying to figure out what kind of posts are actually going to add value on the highly congested blogosphere.

Last week I, among millions of other Twilight fans, got a sneak peek at the next Twilight movie, New Moon, via a surreptitious Comic-Con attendee and their handy cell phone video feature. I am not ashamed to admit (OK, maybe a little ashamed, but you won't judge me, will you?) that the thump, thump of my heart increased to a THUMPTHUMPTHUMPEDITYTHUMP while watching the all-too short clips and as soon as they were over, I dashed out to Target to buy Twilight (why I didn't have it already, I am not sure) and watched it with as much fervor as the first time I saw it. When the movie was over I popped in the special features disc, which is a bit disappointing, save the feature on Robert Pattinson's musical contribution to the movie. Be still my THUMPING heart. The scene at the end of the movie when he fights James and that haunting song in the background is playing while scenes of Bella's life flash through her head, that scratchy, painfully sexy voice is of Mister RP.

I have been married for just over eight months. I can't believe that much time has already gone by. I honestly feel like our wedding day was just a week ago. In the past eight months, while there have been some hiccups, for the most part it has been blissful. I stopped traveling for work. J worked 14-hour days for nearly two weeks after our wedding. Christmas and Thanksgiving were spent in our home. Both of us lost our jobs. Within a month J had a new, amazing job. My unemployment time has stretched out to a bit longer than we both anticipated and the roller coaster of emotions that comes with unemployment has taken us on some interesting rides. Our beautiful twin nephews were born healthy. My brother came to stay with us for a month. My parents visited us twice and now here I am. Still job searching and still hopeful that a door will open. People have asked me if J is supportive of my choice to be picky about the jobs I apply for. My answer is a resounding YES! He understands that I spent the last three years doing something I enjoyed, but did not have a passion for. He understands that now is an opportunity for me to sift through the jobs that, sure I am qualified for, but would lead to another three years of having a job, not a career. For his understanding, his support, his prayers, his encouragement, his role as the breadwinner, his caring and his ability to pick me up when I feel like I can't take anymore, for all of this and more, my heart forever belongs to you.

On Fire

Blue Foundation's "Eyes on Fire" was featured on So You Think You Can Dance a few weeks ago and I immediately loved it. I looked up the video today and much to my surprise, the song was on the Twilight soundtrack (Robert Pattinson, swoon). The song is so haunting and powerful.

There seems to be a trend with songs that have "on fire" in them that I love!

I've been wanting to cut my hair for a while now, but the cojones aren't quite big enough. Lately, this heat is increasing the need for a shorter mane - less hassle, less blow drying and less flat iron. The problem is, I have a round face, so short hair doesn't quite suit me. I'd love to walk into the salon, sit confidently in the chair and say, make me look like this:

This weekend is the last one that my little brother will be spending here with us. We are planning a trip to the Ft. Worth Stockyards and dinner at his favorite, Texas Roadhouse. Other than that, I plan to enjoy the time with him - I know I'll miss him when he's gone!

I've spent quite a few hours in front of the mirror trying to perfect the bohochicthistook foreverbutI'mgoingtotellyouthatittookmefiveminutes braid. I stand there until my arms are sore and all of my bobby pins are unusable and all I have left to show for it is a super sloppy, unkempt, hmmmm, I don't know if I can even call it a braid. It's more of three pieces of hair that have been forcibly entangled and stuck with pain to my head. The girls in the Wednesday Braid group on Flickr put me to shame. After scouring the Internet for the perfect gold necklace, I finally bought one today - it was on a whim, I wasn't even looking for it! I went to lunch with two lovely friends today at Taco Diner (delish, as always) and walked over to locally-owned Epic, in the West Village and saw this little beauty and snatched it up!

If you live in Dallas and haven't been to Epic, get down there yo! They have an amazing earring collection and some cute clothes (a little pricey, but nice eye candy).

dances and dresses

I've referenced my love for So You Think You Can Dance before - it is the one show that I look forward to every week. Alas, I'm a bit disappointed thus far - while there have been a few dances I've thoroughly enjoyed, at this point in the past couple of seasons I already know most of the dancers and have some favorites, not so this year. J will say something about one of the dancers and I say, who? Which one is that?

I hope tonight's episode is the turning point - a Mia Michaels' contemporary dance would certainly make that more likely.

On an unrelated note, I went shopping today for a dress for the wedding we are attending next weekend and have narrowed it down to these two plus one Phoebe Couture dress I couldn't find online.

Tim Burton's imagination and creativity are a force to be reckoned with. New photos of his Alice in Wonderland film have hit the Web and look bananas! My creativity level is one thing that I wish would creep a bit higher. I came across the photo of this dresser and thought, "Now why didn't I think of making a dresser look like mailed letter?" I often stare at this photo hoping to extract some of the creativity and apply it to my bedroom decor.

Today is Friday! Yay. That means I get my husband for two whole days without sharing him with work. Boomshakalaka!

This weekend's schedule includes a zoo visit, eating yummy cherries, gym time, Saturday breakfast, church and making sure my dad knows how amazing he is and how much I love him!

home sweet home

I know it is still a couple of weeks away, but I am so super duper excited for the Fourth of July. Yes, I love the fireworks and sparklers and watermelon. But what I am most excited about is that I will be spending the holiday weekend in the place that I love the most - my grandma's house. Growing up, we lived with my grandma at one point, then lived right next door to her for a bit and when we moved away to San Diego, Puerto Rico, etc., we would spend the summers there. My grandma lives in a tiny little town called La Mesa in New Mexico. She and my grandpa hired builders to build the house, but when my grandpa found out he was being ripped off, he fired them and he and my grandma finished the house. My dad, aunts and uncle grew up here and have countless tales of childhood adventures that I love to sit and listen to. Neighbors are one mile away, separated by fields of cotton and alfalfa. When I was younger, my grandpa grew the most delicious watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes and chile, among other things. My grandma has grown peach trees, apple trees, a pomegranate plant and two regal pecan trees that still reside in the front yard. Driving up to the farm, a feeling of serenity and calmness take over my body. My heart and mind are at complete ease as I step out of the car and into my haven. My grandpa passed away when I was in the eight grade, but I can still feel his spirit on the farm, where he spent his life working harder than any man I know. My grandma is a beautiful woman with the best sense of humor and a beautiful heart. Like I said, I can't wait to go home.

Hi my name is Erica and I'm addicted to Shaved Ice.

Seriously, this fresh summer treat is driving me bananas.

Every time I make my way into Dallas (I live in the burbs) I find a way to inch up Central toward Meadow so I can stop in at Doc's and grab a shaved ice. The photo above is the remnants of a medium Tiger's Blood (small, shmall).

The only two Shaved Ice stands in Dallas I've discovered that are worthy of my dinero are:

The latest Disney/Pixar creation was just what I needed after a week of unemployment-related stress. In the first 15 minutes I was laughing, crying and letting myself form a bond with the charming characters of Up. The swell of emotion in my heart made me want to reach over to my husband and squeeze him with all my might (we were separated by my sister and brother, le sigh). In addition to bravery, friendship, loyalty and good vs evil, there was an underlying story of love, a love that propelled the movie's main character, Carl, to take an journey on a house kept in the air by helium balloons (btw, how cute were Ellie's clothes in the movie?).

Not only did the movie make my heart swell thinking of how lucky I am to have married the love of my life, it gave me inspiration for two projects:

a. Keep my own adventure journal filled with the footprints of my journey through life.

b. It's time to frame some of the wedding photos and put them up in the house. I have been hesitant because I couldn't decide where to put them, but I'm sure I can find somewhere to display photos of one of the most beautiful days of my life!
